EMPATH Alliance: Supporting Abortion Activists in Challenging Contexts

The fight for reproductive rights and access to safe abortion is often fraught with challenges, particularly in regions where restrictive laws and social stigma prevail. The EMPATH Alliance recognizes these challenges and provides vital support to its members working in challenging contexts, such as Nigeria and Cameroon. These dedicated individuals often operate under intense pressure, facing:

• Security risks: Activists may encounter harassment, intimidation, and even violence from individuals or groups opposed to their work. This can range from online threats to physical assaults.

• Legal challenges: In countries with restrictive abortion laws, activists may face arrest and prosecution for their advocacy or for providing information and support related to safe abortion access.

• Social stigma: Stigma surrounding abortion can lead to isolation, discrimination, and even ostracization from families and communities. This can take a toll on activists' mental and emotional wellbeing.

• Limited resources: Many activists work in under-resourced environments, lacking the financial means, tools, and support necessary to carry out their work effectively and safely.

• Holistic Security: EMPATH prioritises the safety and wellbeing of its members, offering training and resources on digital security, physical safety, and self-care. This includes developing security protocols, providing access to legal support, and promoting mental health awareness.

• Advocacy: The Alliance amplifies the voices of its members on national and international platforms, advocating for legal and policy reforms that protect reproductive rights and the safety of activists.

• Capacity Building: EMPATH provides training and resources on state-of-the-art gender and SRHR practice, equipping activists with the knowledge and skills they need to effectively advocate for change and provide essential services to their communities.
