Rethinking Fundraising: Lessons from the EMPATH Alliance

Grassroots civil society organisations often face an uphill battle when it comes to securing funding. Traditional funding models can be inaccessible, with complex application processes and stringent requirements that can be difficult for smaller, less established organisations to meet.

The EMPATH Alliance recently held a workshop focused on innovative fundraising strategies for its members, many of whom are grassroots organisations working in challenging contexts. This workshop provided a space for activists to share their experiences, challenges, and ideas, leading to a set of practical suggestions for rethinking fundraising approaches:

1. Strength in Numbers:

  • Approach funders as an alliance: Collective action can amplify impact and attract larger grants. By presenting a unified front, grassroots organisations can demonstrate a broader reach and greater potential for change.

  • Sell the alliance to funders: Clearly articulate the alliance's shared vision, goals, and the unique value it brings to the table.

2. Diversify Your Funding Sources:

  • Register with funding sources: Explore a wide range of funding opportunities, including those specifically designed for NGOs and grassroots initiatives.

  • Target the private sector: Engage with companies that have a commitment to social responsibility and align with the organisation's mission.

  • Reach out to embassies, foundations, and philanthropists: Cultivate relationships with potential donors who have a demonstrated interest in supporting social justice causes.

3. Clarity and Collaboration:

  • Be specific with funding sources: Clearly outline the organisation's needs and how the funds will be used to achieve specific objectives.

  • Establish membership dues: Create a sustainable funding stream by establishing a membership model with clear benefits for participants.

4. Strategic Planning and Action:

  • Hold regular check-ins: Foster ongoing communication and collaboration among alliance members to brainstorm ideas and track progress.

  • Develop proposals: Invest time in crafting compelling proposals that clearly articulate the organisation's needs, goals, and impact.

  • Reach out to funders from your network and beyond: Leverage existing relationships and actively seek new connections with potential donors.

The EMPATH Alliance is a network of activists and organisations dedicated to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in challenging contexts. By providing support, resources, and opportunities for collaboration, EMPATH aims to strengthen the capacity of grassroots organisations working on the frontlines of SRHR advocacy.
