Celebrate language Diversity: We dey jolly for all the diferent tongue wey we dey speak for Naija.

At GIWYN, we know that clear communication is vital for empowering individuals to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). However, Nigeria's rich linguistic landscape presents unique challenges. With over 500 languages spoken across the country, reaching diverse communities requires our teams to get clever.

Recently, our team gathered to map out our communications strategy for the year ahead. This insightful discussion highlighted the complexities of navigating language barriers in our work. Victoria, a skilled trainer from our Helpline team, shared her experiences working with communities where English isn't widely spoken or understood. She often relies on trusted local translators from the community to ensure our SRHR training and information are accessible to all.

Beyond translation, Victoria encouraged us to work harder for culturally sensitive communication. Building trust and rapport is essential, especially in communities where social norms may discourage open discussions about SRHR.

We recognise the need to adapt our communication style for different audiences. While we celebrate our Nigerian identity and the richness of languages like pidgin English, we also tailor our materials for international partners and donors, but we find ourselves writing for Anglo-American English speakers rather than bringing our own “Nigerian English(es)” to the world.

Going forward, we are committed to:

  • Expanding our use of Nigerian languages: We will explore incorporating more local languages into our communications, including our website and social media, to connect more deeply with diverse communities.

  • Prioritizing accessibility: We will continue to invest in translation and interpretation services to ensure our materials are understood by everyone.

  • Building trust and confidence: We will foster open and respectful dialogue in our training and outreach programs, empowering individuals to ask questions and engage confidently with SRHR information.

GIWYN believes that celebrating linguistic diversity is essential for advancing SRHR in Nigeria. By embracing the multitude of voices and languages in our country, we can create a more inclusive and informed society where everyone can exercise their SRHR.

This is very laudable and commendable. Communication is only efficient when the sender and receiver are in tandem, Adopting local languages is a way to diversify and reach out to more people. GIWYN..... una too much jare.
